How to Avoid WWIII? The Primary Question of Our Time
February 8, 2015jsc
Prophetic voices secular and religious are warning us that humanity is entering into the opening stages of WWIII.
If we stay on this present course, futurists predict rapid and radically negative downward trends in the quality of life on this planet beyond 2050.
Given all the war and more war on the evening news, drones on others today and drones on us tomorrow, it appears the one thing humanity agrees on is the Age of Terror is upon us. What is even more ominous is that most of humanity passively accepts war as inevitable, and we see the mighty and powerful take advantage of this false belief. If we believe war is inevitable, it will be inevitable.
War is no more part of the natural order than slavery or gender inequality, even as these evils continue. So with war as the assumed default solution in human conflict ... we all can see, if we want to see, the end of this civilization. Whatever its greatness the evils far outweigh the good to be found. Prophets old and present warn of the horrors to come unless justice is done.
If this were a living human being, we would hurry it into the emergency room and work feverishly to save it from its suicidal behavior. The patient needs shock treatment. With all these signs of impending catastrophe, does it not make sense to call humanity to the global peace table? Such a call from on high with millions in the streets in support ... we can avoid, perhaps, WWIII.
In theory, yes, but how shall we make a reality of this common hope of humanity building the age of peace? How shall we make the argument for peace strong and believable? How can we enable humanity to trust peace? It is easy to make war sexy, but it is much harder to do so for justice. Justice the answer to war.
Avoiding WWIII requires setting the stage for large-scale action that can change the story we are telling ourselves about ourselves about war and peace.
Will President Obama do these things? Yes, if he can feel the winds of peace strongly at this back.
